The “three R’s” – reading, writing and arithmetic – are needed to get by in school. These skills are needed in the workplace too. Accreon recently hosted an open house at its new office in Charlottetown. The company, which currently has six employees, provides information technology software solutions for healthcare, financial and government clients. Future plans include expanding to 20 employees on PEI.

 PureSCM of Charlottetown recently announced it acquired new contracts with the US-based company CA Technologies. The companies are working together on the emerging cloud computing technology. PureSCM has six employees and expects to grow to 12 by mid-2012. The employees’ duties will be a combination of business consulting and developing.

Atlantec BioEnergy Corporation is building a bio-refinery plant in Cornwall to process locally grown sugar beets to produce ethanol fuel. The demonstration plant will showcase the company’s state-of-the-art processing technology.

The Harbour Authority of Egmont Bay is currently in the process of building a more visitor-friendly area for the upcoming tourism season. The upgrades will include a fish market, take-out eatery, historical and cultural informational panels, an observation deck and retail spaces.

Early Childhood Educators on PEI have a new professional development centre located at the new Prince of Wales campus in Charlottetown. The Holland College Early Learning Centre will allow students to more effectively put childcare theories into practice.

PEI will host the 2012 Canada-Wide Science Fair for the first time. The fair will take place from May 12-19 at UPEI. Over 500 of the best young scientists in grades 7 to 12 from across the country will participate. The federal and provincial governments have invested a combined $200,000 to support the science fair.

UPEI Business students Jordan McNally, Jingshu Zhang, Kristina MacLean and Janell MacDonald recently took first place in Wing Lung Bank International Institute for Business Development (IIBD) Case Competition in Hong Kong. The theme was “Value Creation Through Branding” . Students worked under pressure and a tight deadline to solve a real world business problem and form action-oriented recommendations.

 PEI’s oldest museum, The Garden of the Gulf Museum, just received $59,000 from SkillsPEI to help renovate its third floor to store more artifacts. The Island Community Fund gave $10,000 to the project. The fund also contributed $26,000 to the Montague Lions Club to update its kitchen equipment.

Sharpening the Approach is the name of PEI’s Tourism Plan for 2012. The Tourism Industry Association of PEI, along with the Tourism Advisory Council, developed the plan. It includes more funding for promotional videos and new tools for online booking, among other initiatives.
